Koh Tonsay, a tranquil island in Cambodia
Do you know that apart from gorgeous temples Cambodia also has beautiful islands towards the south in the Gulf of Thailand. Among these Koh Tonsay, known as Rabbit Island, is a beautiful hidden island that visitors shouldn’t miss.
Koh Tonsay is located just 5 km south of Kep town. It has an area of around 2 km² and can be reached by ferry boat from the local port in approximately 30 minutes. The name Rabbit Island comes from the shape of the island, not from any rabbits there.
The island is open for visitors and tourists, who are looking for a quite getaway. Although it is not as famous as other island in Sihanoukville like Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem… but its primitive beauty makes it a favourite place for backpackers.
Coming to Koh Tonsay visitors can stay on the main beach where the boats land on. Along the beach are dozens of small bungalows and several bar or restaurants. Don’t expect a standard hotel or a luxury resort here in Koh Tonsay, because the only accommodation option is a simple little shack, without wifi or electricity. The only power on the island comes from generators and usually only for a few hours during dinner in the evening.
Visitors come to Koh Tonsay to find a litte peace for themselves, escape from busy life. Here you can swim in the warm clean water, lie in a hammock under the palm trees and read a book, or wander around to explore the wildlife in the island.
On Koh Tonsay island, there is only few guesthouse restaurants serving food and drink. Main dishes are fresh seafood and local specialties with reasonable price.
Importan notes:
- Bring along with you portable charge, swimsuits and other personal essentials because there is no convenient stores on the island.
- Don’t forget suncream, sunglasses and anti insects spray.
